On Christmas Eve, we got up for breakfast and noticed it had begun to snow. This was small flake snow, not like the enormous flakes Essex had at the start of December. However, there were lots of them and it began to accumulate. The first thing we wanted to do was explore Partenkirchen. If we could find somewhere for dinner, all the better. I tried a couple of restaurant doors but Germans celebrate on Christmas Eve and it wasn't until I tried the Drei Mohren that we found somewhere. As our hotel wanted €85 each (excluding drink), we were delighted to find somwhere 200 metres from our hotel that was about €25 per head including our beer. As we walked around Partenkirchen, we saw lots of houses, office blocks, hotels and other buildings had paintings on the walls. I had seen this before, as had my wife, but some examples were especially charming. We walked all the way down to the ski-jump stadium. By now, the snow was so heavy that the top was invisible. All the mountains had vanished as well. It was getting towards midday and everything was beginning to close. The snow got really heavy so we trudged back to the hotel. The hotel bar/cafe was open. We read books, wrote postcards and had a couple of beers. Soon after 6pm, we walked up to the Drei Mohren. Dinner was superb. Denise had roast venison and I had a mixed-game platter that had venison, wild-boar and ibex. Delicious!
